Allegany calls for hearings on windmill proposal

Chautauqua County | Zoning

Supervisor Pat Eaton said the hearing is required by state law for the wind mill issue as the town has called for a moratorium, or suspension of activity, until the planning board can research the matter. The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 10 in the town hall and the public is encouraged to attend to give their thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Town of Allegany officials announced at Thursday’s meeting that a public hearing will be held Aug. 10 for a wind mill proposal and water rate increases in the town.

In March, the board reported that out-of-town investors for a windmill company were interested in setting up a windmill farm that would produce electricity. A windmill is an engine powered by the energy of wind. Those used for generating electricity are more commonly referred to as wind turbines.

Mr. Eaton said the planning board was asked to review the zoning ordinance for the area and they, in return, sent a reply asking if they could have up to a year to research the issue and set up guidelines.

“The town is not anti-windmill, we just want to do it right,” Mr. Eaton said. “It’s a relatively new issue statewide.”
